New Zealand's only endemic land mammals are bats.
The Maori name for bats are pekapeka. There are two species of the short
tailed bat and there is a long tailed bat too. The long tailed bat has
a membrane attached to its tail. The short tailed species has a short
tail. Both the species of bats are fully protected. Short tailed
bats way around about 12-15 grams.
