The beginnings were humble: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. The 'country' of India was divided into many regional kingdoms and because of not being united, by the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism under Mohandas Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru led to independence in 1947, on August 15th, it was during the reign of the British that people truly realized who they were, that people truly realized that they were Indian and only if they strove for freedom in unity would the sweet fruit of success be available. |
| Since then, India has become the largest democracy in the world, numbering over 1 billion people to date. Our economic and political growth has jumped in leaps and bounds, and we could even be set up to become a world superpower. |
